Autumn-is-Here!-How-to-Protect-Your-Roof

Your property’s roof is often worth more than a new car. Yet, unlike our beloved vehicles, we tend to neglect regular checks and proper maintenance that our roofs need.

That’s even more important now Autumn is here. In this post, we’re going to take a look at some of the steps you can take to protect your roof now the leaves have started to fall…

Clean out the gutters

We all enjoy the beauty of the orange and yellow autumn leaves. Until they fall from the branches and turn to a wet, soggy mess on the floor. That’s exactly how your guttering feels.

The mass of fallen leaves can get into your guttering system and create blockages that, without proper clearance, can cause chaos. You can suffer breaks, leaks and even mould from leaving your gutters unattended.

Keep branches trimmed

If you have any large trees near your home, it’s best to keep the branches to a minimum. Any long branches could come loose in the autumn winds and become cause damage to your roof.

Overgrown trees are often an invitation for birds, squirrels and other rodents too. Their branches provide a perfect route onto your roof, which could lead to infestations and damage to roofing materials if left unnoticed.

Inspect the area

It’s important to have your roof inspected regularly to make sure that everything is clear and there’s no damage. You can do a quick check yourself by taking a walk around your property and looking for things like loose tiles, broken guttering and other general wear and tear.

Or, better still, have a professional inspection to make sure everything is up to scratch and there’s no work that needs doing before winter. This way, if anything does need fixing, you can rest assured it’s been seen to before the worst weather hits.

Head to the loft

One of the easiest ways to check for roof damage is to make sure your loft is nice and dark. Check your loft in the daytime and cover any windows. If natural light is making its way in, excluding windows, then your roof will need some work.

Look for water too. Discolouration or damp in your roof space means water is getting in somewhere, which is a clear sign that you need a roof inspection.

Be prepared

Autumn is a tough time for your roof, and it’s important to be prepared. By having your roof inspected and any issues corrected before the weather starts to change, you can save yourself both time and money.

At DPR Roofing, we carry out thorough roof inspections throughout Wakefield and the surrounding areas. We’ll check the state of your roof and guttering, with specialist guttering and roofing services to rectify any issues.
